Shelter by Mickey Bolitar

The story and the characters
The book is based around a tall, brown haired, athletic teenager named Mickey Bolitar, who has witnessed his fathers death and sent his mother to rehab, because of her drug addiction. Mickey is portrayed as a serene person who likes to protect people. Before all these tragedies had occurred to the Bolitar family had they been a happy family traveling around the world to help people who where in hard situations, but the situation looked different now. Instead did Mickey have to move into his uncle Myrons house and had to start a new school in the area, where he quickly got a girlfriend named Ashley. She disappeared suddenly a day, without a trace and at the same time was Mickey getting told by a old women named Batlady that his dad was still alive and after that experience was he consistently encountered by a bald faced, tattooed man. Mickey also got to now Ema and Spoon at his new school, who he became friends with and they are crucial throughout the story telling. Ema is a dark dressed mysterious girl meanwhile Spoon is a dorky boy. Could Ashley's disappearance and the weird encounter with Batlady in this detective book be connected somehow and get solved by some teens?

The Setting
The story takes place in a smaller city in the United States. I got this information through the description of where Mickey had lived throughout his younger years and in the same chapter stood it that they had settled down in a smaller city in USA. From what I understood is that the city is medium wealthy and different wealth classes between people occurs. Some examples that I could imply that showed the disparity between the poor and rich people in this book are Ashley's and Rachel’s different economic situations. I wouldn't say that this book is descriptive when it comes to the setting but it is certainly descriptive when it comes to the inside thoughts and feelings, of especially Mickey.

The message
This book is a part of a trilogy. That's why I find it hard to find a message, because it's probably going to be a more understandable message throughout the other books. But the thought I got after I had read the book was that the person with most problems, in this case Mickey, could also be the strongest and most understandable person because they have went through similar experiences. That makes them to be there for you as a protector, described as a Shelter.

The opinion
My overall opinion of this book is partly negative but mostly positive. The thing that I disliked with the book the most was the beginning, when it went by so slow, this made me question the book and I felt uninterested while reading it. One thing that I also recognized was the lack of the setting description. I am usually more drawn to books where the writer paints up a colorful and vivid picture alongside the storytelling. There was obviously also a lot of good things within the book, that outweighed the bad things. I liked how the writer later in the book could come up with such a good story, that braided together both historically experiences and many plot twists, to keep the book interesting. I would recommend this book to teenagers who has good knowledge when it comes to reading in english, because the book uses mostly basic words but also harder words. It's also suited to teenagers because the book is based around teenagers. I approve the ending of the book because it was a good cliffhanger, where I felt like I wanted to continue reading. The title fits the story because it is a ongoing theme throughout the book.
