Gansta Granny by David Walliams

The story:
In the beginning of book it’s about Ben not wanting to go to his granny when his parents are going out to an arena to watch strictly stars dance live which they are pretty much addicted to, so they go there every Friday and leave Ben with his granny. Ben thinks his granny smells like cabbage and is boring so he doesn’t want to go there. When he gets there his granny always cooks him food with cabbage he is so sick and tired of being there until one night. Ben is following his granny who is dressed all black, she is on her way to the jewel store and when Ben exposes her she tells him that she is a international jewel thief, she makes him promise not to tell anyone, not even his parents. Further on in the story granny tells Ben she has been planning to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London her entire life.

The characters:
Ben’s mother works on a store called Gail’s nails, they pretty much only do their own nails all day because of their lack of customers. Ben’s dad works as a security guard at the local mall, the most action he’s had was when a old man tried to steal margarine by putting it in his underwear. Granny is a retired jewel thief but she is thinking about getting back in the business by stealing the Crown Jewels from The Tower of London.

The setting:
The story is taking place in England, probably some place close to London because they are talking about it in the book. The family seems pretty average, both parents have a decent job, Ben goes to school. I think the setting is poorly described, you would get a better picture of the scene if the author described the setting more.

The message:
I think this book is written to give young kids a laugh and a good reading experience, because in the book you can find this silly humour that every kid likes.

My opinion:
I didn’t like this book very much, sure it was good but it’s not my type of book. I would recommend it though, if you are under 12 years old I think you will find this book quite funny. (I’m 15 by the way). I liked that Ben’s granny was a jewel thief of all, it kind of mixes up the generations, I mean, you don’t expect a grandmother to be a jewel thief, don’t you? It’s pretty easy to read that’s why I would recommend people with reading difficulties or young people who are learning to read this.
I think the title fits the story perfectly because it’s pretty “gangsta” to rob a jewel store.
