Shelter by Harlan Coben

This story is about Mickey Bolitar, a heroic 14 year old boy who’s life changed forever after his fathers accidental death, which took place a year before the story had begun. After this incident Mickeys mother began taking drugs and was sent to rehab. Mickey is now living with his uncle, whom he doesn’t like. And in this new chapter in his life he also starts in a new school where he quickly becomes an outcast. He later gets to know Spoon and Ema, who are also considered outcasts in his eyes. Spoon is a very nerdy, smart and dorky person. Ema on the other side is a little “darker”, she usually dresses in all black and is a bit cold towards others.

Together they try to solve the mystery behind Mickey’s girlfriend, Ashley's disappearance. She was one of the popular pretty girls in school, who seemed to have quite the perfect life. They quickly learn that not everything they knew about Ashley was true. They discover that Ashley wasn’t the person she said she was and that she had lied about her horrendous past. While on the search for her whereabouts, not only do they grow closer to each other, but they also truly show their courageous side. During this search for Ashley they also find out much more than they had expected. Not only do they find out secrets about this town and its residents, but also about the truth of Mickeys family.

I don’t really think this book has a message that’s clearly presented just yet since this story is made into a book series. Though it will be more apparent as the story goes on, but I do have an idea of why the author wrote this to begin with. This book is very comical and interesting, so I do think the author wanted the reader to read this story to somehow be able to escape the reality for a bit. It’s in some parts of the story very relatable and funny because of the characters in it.

This story takes place in the US. The city he lives in isn’t named although you can tell that its on the smaller side, because locations Mickey usually visits are often described as being near by.

In the beginning I didn’t like the story at all, because I didn’t really connect with the characters. The first hundred pages were really boring and it felt like the story didn’t progress much. But after reading more I started to like it because more interesting things started to occur. And as I had read more then story became intriguing. I would consider the language pretty easy to read, I think a middle schooler or someone in a lower grade could read this pretty easily. In a way the ending was what I expected until the very last page, where there was a unexpected twist. The reason I liked this book was because of the twits and turns the story would take.
