Shelter by Harlan Coben

This book is about fifteen year old Mickey Bolitar. Mickey is a very tall and brave guy who always wants to protect the people he loves and does everything for them. After a life traveling around with his parents and their work they decide to settle down in Casselton in New Jersey. In the same time Mickey witnesses his father's death in a car accident and shortly after, his mom gets sent to rehab. Mickey has to live with his uncle Myron and gets to start at this new school as a sophomore. He gets to know new real friends such as Ema and Spoon.
Ema, I would say, turns out to be Mickey's best friend. She is a girl with a goth or emo style and she is mostly by herself in school. In the beginning she is very shallow but after the book goes on she opens up more for her new friends. She is also very brave.
Spoon is another guy at the school, also with not much friends. He is skinny and wears glasses and is kind of nerdy I would say.
Mickey gets to know this new girl named Ashley, who eventually becomes his girlfriend. All you get to know about her is that she’s a mystery but beautiful girl that wears second hand close and keeps a low profile. During the book you get to know more and more secrets about her.
Strange things start happening to Mickey. The bat lady, who everyone tells stories about and is the spooky old lady in the corrupt house, tells Mickey his first day on his way to school that his father is still alive. Shortly after Ashley is missing and more and more secrets comes up. Mickey and his new friends tries to find Ashley with every lead they got but everything with Ashley and the scary old bat lady leads right back to his father. How could Mickeys father be involved in all this? And could he really be alive? That’s what Mickey and his friends are trying to find out.

This story take place in the city Casselton, like I wrote. Everything is described very normal. What I mean is not too rich or not too poor. But the surroundings is not very well described. Just special places like the secret ”workplace” later in the book but otherwise, the surrounding is not that well described.

I can not really tell the message in the book because this is the first book in a serie. So the message is not that clear. I think this is a pretty average book. It has a mystery story with a boy and his friends who’s trying to follow leads to get to the truth. Sure, this book could be a good book to read because it's easy to understand the story and the language is easy. But in my opinion, this is not a book for me. My favorite type of book is thrillers, and this is a thriller but I have read these kinds of books with much better story and with a better set up. The book got better in the end but I didn’t like the ending so no, this is not a book for me.
